Scotland Women: Real Madrid's Caroline Weir named captain with Chelsea's Erin Cuthbert appointed vice-captain

Caroline Weir has been named Scotland Women's captain on a permanent basis.

The Real Madrid midfielder has played 115 times for her country and replaces Rachel Corsie, who retired last summer before joining Your Site as an analyst.

She said: "I'm honoured and delighted to be named captain of the Scotland Women's national team. It's such a proud moment for me and my family.

"I'm very grateful to Melissa and the staff for the trust they have put in me, as well as every coach and player that has helped me get to this point.

"Every opportunity to represent Scotland is a privilege and to do so as captain is even more special and a responsibility that I'm excited to embrace.

"I'm fortunate to be surrounded by so many natural leaders within this squad and to have learned from those who have gone before me.

"It's an exciting time for us as we start the qualification journey to Brazil 2027, with a passionate, hard-working and talented group of players."

Chelsea's Erin Cuthbert, who has 82 caps, has been named vice-captain by head coach Melissa Andreatta.

She said: "It's an incredible privilege and honour to take on this role for the Scotland Women's national team.

"As a little girl, I never imagined that I would represent Scotland so many times never mind take on a leadership role of this magnitude.

"I'm looking forward to working with Caroline and doing everything we can to make sure this team succeeds.

"We're building something special and I'd love nothing more than to get us back to major tournaments - where I believe we belong."

Scotland's first games under the new captain and vice-captain will be a World Cup qualifying double-header against Luxembourg on March 3 and March 7.

Andreatta has named a 23-player squad for the games, with Hibernian forward Kathleen McGovern returning following injury, while Celtic's Maria McAneny keeps her spot after scoring on her senior debut against Ukraine in November.

Martha Thomas, who is on loan at Liverpool from Tottenham, misses out despite scoring in Sunday's 4-1 Women's Super League win over Aston Villa.

Rangers' Leah Eddie also misses out, and is replaced by uncapped Charlton defender Charlotte Newsham.

Seven of the eight players who made their Scotland debuts in 2025 will start this year's qualification campaign..

Goalkeepers: Eartha Cumings (Manchester City), Lee Gibson (Glasgow City), Sandy MacIver (Washington Spirit).

Defenders: Georgia Brown (SC Jacksonville), Jenna Clark (Liverpool), Nicola Docherty (Rangers), Sophie Howard (FC Como), Emma Lawton (Celtic), Rachel McLauchlan (Brighton), Amy Muir (Glasgow City), Charlotte Newsham (Charlton).

Midfielders: Chelsea Cornet (Birmingham City), Erin Cuthbert (Chelsea), Kirsty Maclean (Liverpool), Maria McAneny (Celtic), Miri Taylor (Aston Villa), Caroline Weir (Real Madrid).

Forwards: Lauren Davidson (SK Brann), Freya Gregory (Newcastle United), Kirsty Hanson (Aston Villa), Kirsty Howat (Crystal Palace), Mia McAulay (Rangers), Kathleen McGovern (Hibernian).
