Livingston: David Martindale handed sporting director role after "terrible" run as Marvin Bartley takes over as manager

David Martindale's five-year spell as Livingston manager is over but he remains in a position of authority after making way for his assistant Marvin Bartley.

Martindale has been appointed sporting director with former Queen of the South boss Bartley stepping up from No 2 to manager, after returning to the club in the summer.

The news came 24 hours after left and without a victory in their last 23 league games.

A section of fans demanded Martindale's departure as Livi were outplayed in a first half that saw Tawanda Maswanhise strike twice for the visitors.

In a statement, Martindale said: "I have to take accountability for this terrible run we have been on. This season has proven incredibly difficult for a number of reasons, and I fully understand that change was necessary at the club.

"I believe Marvin, supported by the staff and players at the club, has the squad and ability to keep us in the league, but I know how big a job that will be.

"I will be here to offer any support I can going forward, but I am also conscious that there has to be a clear divide between my new role and the first team footballing department."

Martindale officially became manager in December 2020 but had played an influential role in player recruitment and other areas of the club during a near five-year spell as assistant manager.

He initially joined Livi as a volunteer coach in 2014 after doing his coaching badges and getting a university degree as he rebuilt his life following a spell in jail on drugs and money laundering charges.

"I will remain forever grateful to Livingston FC past and present for giving me the opportunity to work and manage this football club," he said.

"I cannot articulate how this has shaped my life and given me opportunities. I will always be grateful for that."

Martindale has been backed with a number of new signings by American owner Calvin Ford during the transfer window but many of them are still trying to get their match fitness up.

Chairman Ford, who took control last summer, praised Martindale's "unprecedented loyalty and passion" and declared himself "thrilled" to still have him in the club in the new role.

Ford added: "With his knowledge of the game, passion for recruitment and understanding of how we want to build the club, Davie's participation in the growth of Livingston FC is absolutely vital to our long-term success.

"Marvin Bartley is ready for this opportunity. I have full confidence in his ability to lead this club on the pitch and in the dressing room.

"His experience with Davie and at Queen of the South made the decision as Davie's successor an easy one. He has my full support, and I look forward to watching Marvin achieve the very best from our players."

Former Hibernian midfielder Bartley's first game in charge comes at home against Falkirk on Wednesday.
